Measured Electromagnetic Pulses Verify Asymptotics and Analysis for Linear, Dispersive Media

چکیده
Electromagnetic precursors and other pulses in dispersive media have been studied theoretically since 1914. Yet a recent National Research Council study [1, p. 73–75] found few measurements that verify the relevant theories. Verification is useful because, where independent theories and measurements agree, the results are highly reliable. This report describes two laboratory verifications of transient-electromagnetic theory that I completed recently.

Linear dispersive pre-defined peak amplitude modulation of spectrally modulated Airy-based pulses.
Spectrally modulated Airy-based pulses peak amplitude modulation (PAM) in linear dispersive media is investigated, designed, and numerically simulated. As it is shown here, it is possible to design the spectral modulation of the initial Airy-based pulses to obtain a pre-defined PAM profile as the pulse propagates. Although optical pulses self-amplitude modulation is a well-known effect under no...
متن کامل3 Applications of the wave packet method to resonant transmission and reflection gratings
Scattering of femtosecond laser pulses on resonant transmission and reflection gratings made of dispersive (Drude metals) and dielectric materials is studied by a time-domain numerical algorithm for Maxwell’s theory of linear passive (dispersive and absorbing) media. The algorithm is based on the Hamiltonian formalism in the framework of which Maxwell’s equations for passive media are shown to ...
متن کاملFinite-difference time-domain simulation of ground penetrating radar on dispersive, inhomogeneous, and conductive soils
A three-dimensional (3-D) time-domain numerical scheme for simulation of ground penetrating radar (GPR) on dispersive and inhomogeneous soils with conductive loss is described. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to discretize the partial differential equations for time stepping of the electromagnetic fields. The soil dispersion is modeled by multiterm Lorentz and/or Debye m...
متن کاملNew approach to pulse propagation in nonlinear dispersive optical media
We develop an intuitive approach for studying propagation of optical pulses through nonlinear dispersive media. Our new approach is based on the impulse response of linear systems, but we extend the impulse response function using a self-consistent time-transformation approach so that it can be applied to nonlinear media as well. Numerical calculations based on our new approach show excellent a...
متن کاملDEVELOPMENT OF AN FDTD TOOL FOR MODELING OF DISPERSIVE MEDIA Part I. Material parameters and updating equations for fields
The implementation of the Debye, narrowband Lorentzian, and wideband Lorentzian dielectric and magnetic media in the numerical tool EZ-FDTD developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR is described. This tool allows efficient and robust full-wave finite-difference time-domain modeling of different complex electromagnetic structures. Algorithms for dispersive media use the linear recursive...
